A wood stove is only as good as what it is connected to. It needs a stainless liner running the full height of the flue, the opening lined in fireproof board, the pipe connected and sealed, and a hearth pad with the clearances the code calls for. Done properly it draws hard, burns clean and heats the room. Done cheaply it smokes back into the house and lays creosote all the way up. We size the liner to the stove, line the opening, set it, and light the first fire with you standing there.

Often yes — the stove sits in or in front of the opening and vents up the existing chimney through a liner sized to the stove. What decides it is the size and condition of the flue and how much hearth you have in front. I run a camera up the flue, photograph what is there, and show you what it would take.
A masonry flue built for an open fireplace is usually far larger than a stove needs. Exhaust from a stove moves slowly through an oversized flue, cools on the way up, and leaves creosote behind, and the stove draws poorly as a result. A liner matched to the stove outlet keeps the exhaust moving and gives you a flue that can actually be cleaned.
That number comes from the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific stove, and it changes with the model and with whether any shielding is used. It is not something to eyeball. I measure the room against the clearances listed for your stove and show you where it can go before anything is set in place.
