Older masonry chimneys are lined with clay tiles stacked one on top of another. Over the years the mortar between them cracks and washes out, and once there are gaps the flue no longer holds smoke where it belongs — heat and gases can reach the brick and the framing around it. The old fix was to tear the chimney open and relay the tiles. Resurfacing coats the inside of the flue instead, filling every joint and leaving a smooth sealed surface, all from the top down. Same result, no demolition.

When resurfacing is the right call

Our Process

01

Camera Inspect

Run a camera down the flue and show you exactly where the joints are open.

02

Clean

Sweep the flue back to bare tile so the coating can bond.

03

Apply

Pull the sealant up through the flue, filling every gap on the way.

04

Re-Inspect

Camera back down to confirm every joint is filled, and you see the footage.

Common Questions

Resurfacing or a new stainless liner?

If the tiles are cracked at the joints but the tiles themselves are sound, resurfacing seals it without demolition and costs less. If tiles are broken, shifted, or missing, a stainless liner is the honest answer and we will say so. The camera decides it, not us — and you watch the footage before anything is quoted.

Common Questions

Flue Resurfacing FAQ

Can my flue be resurfaced, or does it have to be relined?

It depends on what the camera finds. Resurfacing is the right answer when the tiles are still in place and the trouble is cracked joints or a worn surface. If tiles are missing, broken through, or shifted out of line, resurfacing is not the honest fix, and I will tell you that with the photo in front of you.

How do I know the repair actually worked?

I run the camera through the flue before and after, and you look at both. That is the whole reason to do it this way. You should not have to take anyone’s word for what is happening fifteen feet up a dark flue.

Why did my flue tiles crack in the first place?

Usually heat. Clay expands fast when a hot fire hits a cold flue, and the joints are the weakest point, so a chimney fire can open them up in a single night. Water does it slowly instead: it gets in through a failed crown or a missing cap, sits in a hairline crack, and works it wider every time the temperature swings.
