If the old damper is cracked, warped, or gone altogether, the chimney is an open hole in your roof all year. That is heated air out in winter, cooled air out in summer, and rain, leaves and animals coming in. We fit a new damper sized to your chimney — either a replacement throat damper above the firebox, or a top-sealing damper that mounts at the top of the flue and seals with a rubber gasket for a much tighter close.

The one in your fireplace sits in the throat just above the firebox, and it is metal resting on metal, so it slows air rather than sealing it. A top-sealing damper mounts on the top of the flue and closes onto a gasket, which shuts the whole flue instead of just the bottom of it. A cable runs down the flue to a handle inside the firebox, so you still work it from where you always did.
Yes, and it matters more than with a throat damper, because this one really does seal. The handle sits inside the firebox where it is hard to miss. Before I leave, I will show whoever lights the fire in your house how it works.
It helps a great deal. That smell is creosote and soot in the flue, and what carries it into the room is warm humid air pushing down the chimney when the house is cooler than outside. Sealing the top of the flue stops that airflow. If the flue is also dirty, though, sealing it only handles half of it — a sweep is the other half.
