Refractory panels are the moulded firebrick that lines the back and sides of a prefabricated firebox. They take the heat so the metal shell does not. Over the years they crack, the surface flakes off, and pieces break away at the corners. Once a crack is wider than a coin, or you can see the metal behind the panel, the fireplace should not be used until the panel is replaced. We pull the old panels, fit new ones cut to your firebox, and seal the seams with refractory cement.

When panels need replacing

Our Process

01

Inspect

Measure the cracks and check whether the metal shell is exposed.

02

Remove

Take out the cracked panels and clean the firebox down to bare metal.

03

Fit

Cut and set new panels tight to the back and side walls.

04

Seal

Seal the seams with refractory cement and let it cure before the first fire.

Common Questions

My firebox panels are cracked. Can I still use the fireplace?

A hairline crack is normal and can wait. But once a crack is wider than a coin, or a chunk has broken out and you can see metal behind it, stop using it. The panel is what keeps the fire off the steel shell and the wood framing behind the wall. We will photograph the crack and measure it in front of you, and tell you straight whether it can wait until next season or not.

Common Questions

Refractory Panels FAQ

How bad does a crack have to be before the panel needs replacing?

Fine surface lines show up on almost every panel that has been burned in. What matters is whether the crack runs through the panel and whether the surface is crumbling or losing pieces. I photograph each panel and show you the difference on screen, instead of guessing from a description over the phone.

Can I keep using the fireplace with a cracked panel?

The panels are what keep fire off the metal shell of the firebox. Once a panel is cracked through or missing pieces, that protection is gone in that spot, and I would hold off on burning until it is replaced. If what I find is only surface crazing, I will tell you that too — I am not going to call something urgent when it is not.

Do the panels have to match my exact fireplace model?

A prefabricated firebox is built to a specific model, and the panels are made to fit that model. I read the model off the data plate inside the firebox, usually on a side wall or under the trim, before anything is ordered. If panels for your model are no longer available, I will tell you straight rather than forcing something to fit.
