The smoke chamber is the funnel-shaped space right above the firebox, before the flue. On a lot of older fireplaces it was built with stepped brick and open mortar joints. Those steps and gaps slow the smoke down, so it rolls back into the room, and they catch creosote where you cannot see it. We coat the whole chamber smooth with a high-temperature parge, filling the joints and rounding the steps, so the draft pulls properly and there is nothing left for creosote to grab onto.

A rough, stepped smoke chamber is one common reason — it slows the draft right where the smoke needs to speed up. It can also be a damper that is not opening fully, a cold flue, a blockage, or the house pulling air the wrong way. I look at the chamber and photograph it before telling you which one you have.
The brick above the firebox is usually stepped inward in ledges as it narrows toward the flue. Parging fills those steps with a smooth, angled coat so the smoke moves up one clean path instead of tumbling over every edge. It also leaves far less rough surface for creosote to grab onto.
